If you’ve never been to a spa before, it’s completely normal to feel unsure about what to expect.
In fact, this is one of the most common reasons people delay booking — not because they don’t want the experience, but because they don’t know how it all works.
So let’s take the pressure off.
Here’s exactly what happens on your first spa day at The Grange Spa — calmly, step by step.
What Happens When You Arrive?
From the moment you arrive, our focus is simple: help you relax.
We’ll welcome you warmly and get you comfortably seated so you can begin to switch off straight away. If you haven’t already completed it, we’ll gently go through a short medical questionnaire — simply to make sure we look after you properly.
You’ll then be offered a complimentary welcome drink. Choose from tea, herbal tea, coffee, water, or orange juice — whatever feels right in that moment.
Next, we’ll give you:
-
Your locker key, with your robe and towel inside
-
Your itinerary, so you know what’s happening and when
Finally, we’ll take you on a short tour of the facilities, so you feel confident about where everything is and can move around at your own pace.
Nothing is rushed. Nothing is overwhelming. You’re never left wondering what to do next.
What Do I Wear (and When)?
Whatever you feel most comfortable in.
Most guests arrive in leisurewear or comfortable clothing, then change into their robe shortly after arrival. Once you’re in your robe, you can stay that way for the rest of your visit if you wish — with swimwear or underwear underneath, of course.
There’s no dress code and no expectations. Comfort always comes first.
Do I Need to Talk?
Nope.
If you’re an introvert, prefer quiet, or simply don’t feel like chatting, that’s absolutely fine. You’re welcome to enjoy your spa day in silence.
We’ll always be warm and attentive, but we’ll never force conversation. Many guests come specifically for the peace — and we respect that completely.
Can I Bring a Book or a Journal?
Absolutely — we actually recommend it.
A good book, a journal, or even just some quiet thinking time fits perfectly with a spa day. Many guests enjoy using the space to reflect, unwind, or simply be still for a while.
And if you forget to bring one, don’t worry — we have a well-stocked library available for guests to enjoy during their visit.
Research suggests that stepping away from constant digital input, even briefly, allows attention to settle and supports deeper relaxation.
What If I’ve Never Been to a Spa Before?
You’re not alone — and you’re in very safe hands.
We keep guest numbers limited and take a very human-centred approach. That means we notice when someone’s new and quietly make sure they feel comfortable, supported, and at ease.
There’s no spa etiquette you need to memorise and no “right way” to do things. We’ll guide you gently and let you enjoy the experience in your own way.
What If I Don’t “Do” Spas?
You probably will after this — and there’s a reason for that.
Many people say they “aren’t spa people” because they associate spas with formality or feeling out of place. In reality, a spa doesn’t need to be performative to be beneficial.
Research indicates that spa therapies such as massage, heat exposure and hydrotherapy can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve sleep quality — benefits that support both mental and physical wellbeing, rather than simply offering short-term relaxation.
In other words, a spa day isn’t about being “into spas”. It’s about giving your nervous system a break.
At its best, a spa is simply a space to breathe, slow down, and step away from constant demands. That’s what we focus on.
Can I Use My Phone at the Spa?
Yes — mobile phones are welcome.
We understand that some guests enjoy capturing moments or staying lightly connected, and if that helps you relax, that’s absolutely fine. That said, we do gently encourage guests to be mindful of others and, where possible, to switch phones off or keep them on silent.
There’s good reason for this. Research suggests that even having a phone nearby can quietly drain attention, meaning the mind never fully settles. Putting your phone away — even briefly — can help your brain properly switch off and relax.
Many guests tell us this small act makes a surprisingly big difference to how calm they feel during their visit.
What If I Just Want to Be Left Alone?
That’s our speciality.
If your idea of a perfect spa day is being left in peace with minimal interaction, you’re in exactly the right place. We’re always here if you need us — and happily in the background when you don’t.
For many people, that quiet space is where the real benefit happens.
Spa Etiquette – A Few Gentle Guidelines
We keep spa etiquette relaxed and centred around shared comfort rather than strict rules.
Quiet conversation is welcome, but we ask that voices are kept low so everyone can enjoy the calm environment.
Mobile phones are welcome, but we encourage mindful use and silent mode where possible.
Loungers are available for everyone, so when you move on, please take your towel with you or hang it on the hooks provided. Fresh towels and alternative gown sizes are always available at reception.
Drinking water is available poolside and in the gym, and we encourage guests to stay well hydrated throughout your visit. You’ll also find a disposable bag in your locker to take home any wet swimwear at the end of the day.
Smoking is permitted, but we kindly ask that it’s done away from other guests and well clear of the building or any fire-risk areas, so everyone can enjoy the space comfortably and safely.
And above all else, the most important guideline of all:
Take Rest.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know spa etiquette before visiting?
No. We keep things relaxed and will guide you if you need anything. There’s no pressure to behave a certain way.
Can I use my phone at the spa?
Yes. Phones are welcome, especially for photos or staying lightly connected. We simply ask guests to be mindful of others and keep phones on silent where possible.
Why does switching off my phone help me relax?
Research suggests that even having a phone nearby can quietly drain attention. Putting it away allows the mind to settle more fully, which can support deeper relaxation.
Is there any real benefit to going to a spa?
Studies indicate that spa therapies such as massage, heat exposure and hydrotherapy can help reduce stress and anxiety and improve sleep quality, supporting both mental and physical wellbeing.
What if I’m not good at relaxing?
You’re not alone. Many people struggle to switch off in daily life. A spa provides a calm environment with fewer demands, which helps the body and mind naturally slow down.
